Pangu Creates the Heaven and Earth – Excerpt From: Guideways through Mountains and Seas

Before the creation of heaven and earth, the universe was nothing but a chaotic air mass. There was neither light nor sound.
Suddenly, Pangu appeared and swung his huge axe down on the mass. With a deafening boom, the mass was split into two. The lighter, clear air slowly floated upward and formed ‘Heaven’. The heavier, turbid air settled down and formed ‘Earth’. Thenceforth, Heaven and Earth were separated, and light began to emerge from the center. Heaven grew ten feet taller each day, and Earth grew ten feet thicker each day. Pangu also grew ten feet taller each day, so that he could support Heaven. 18, 000 years passed. Heaven became very high, and Earth became very thick. As for Pangu, who grew together with Heaven and Earth, he naturally became a giant whose head reached the sky.
Later on, when Pangu died, his right eye became the moon, and his left eye became the sun. His hair and beard became the stars, and his breath became the wind and mist. His voice became thunder and lightning. His flesh became land. His limbs formed the mountains. Finally, his blood turned into the rivers. From then, the sun, moon and stars appeared in the sky, the land gave birth to mountains, streams, and forests, which in turn nurtured all forms of life, creating the beautiful world that we live in now.
