The Origin of the Flower Fairies

故事全文

Legend has it that Pangu’s daughter was in charge of all the flowers. She was known as the Goddess of Flowers.

Before Pangu died, he handed a pack of flower seeds to his daughter, and told her,“Take these seeds and go west to the Mountain of Pure Soil 22,222 li (11,111 km) away. Take 1 dan (50 kg) of pure soil, spread it out upon the celestial stone, and then plant the seeds in the soil. Then, go east to the Lake of True Water 44,444 li (22,222 km) away. Take 1 dan (50 kg) of true water that does not evaporate, and water the seeds with it to make them germinate. Then, go south to the Lake of Virtuous Water 66,666 li (33,333 km) away. Take 1 dan (50 kg) of virtuous water and spray it upon the saplings to make them grow flower buds. Finally, go north to the Lake of Beautiful Water 88,888 li (44,444 km) away. Take 1 dan (50 kg) of beautiful water to moisten the flower buds so that they bloom. Give some flowers to your eldest brother, the Jade Emperor, so that he may decorate the heavens. Also, give some to your second eldest brother the Yellow Emperor so that he may add color to the mortal realm.”Having spoken, Pangu died.

The God of Flowers asked the Jade Emperor,“Could you help me to send some flowers down to the mortal realm for our brother?”

The Jade Emperor called forth a hundred fairies, and told them,“I hereby confer upon you the title of Flower Fairy, and you shall be governed by the Goddess of Flowers. You are to pick one flower each. The fairy who picks the peony flower shall be called the Peony Fairy, and the fairy who picks the lotus flower shall be called the Lotus Fairy, and so on and so forth. You shall each be in charge of scattering your flower into the mortal realm.”

After the Flower Fairies received their orders, they carried their flower basket with one hand, and scattered the flowers downward into the mortal realm with their other hand. As they did so, the flowers drifted down upon the mortal realm and took root. The mortal realm has been blessed with beautiful flowers ever since.
