The Other Side of the Mountain

故事全文

Little Kite was a newly born black kite hatchling. As his parents feared he might be bullied, they built their home high above the ground, surrounded by bare rock. And so, all the little kite could see were stones and tree branches. Because their nest was so isolated, Little Kite’s parents had to fly a long distance each day in search of food to feed the little one.

Little Kite’s father was the strongest and cleverest of all the black kites in the nearby mountains. When he was young, Little Kite’s father traveled great distances, and saw many sights. He told Little Kite,“On the other side of this mountain, there is a place called the ‘city’. Inside the city, there are animals who walk on two legs; and even further away, there is a place called the ‘sea’, which is full of blue water, and many animals live in it.”

Every night, Little Kite’s father would tell his son what he saw on the other side of the mountain. Little Kite thought,“One day, I also want to fly to the other side of the mountain, and see what my father has seen.”And so, Little Kite tried his best to learn how to fly, and kept practicing how to fly fast and skillfully.

Before long, Little Kite grew up and left his parents. He flew toward the other side of the mountain, and saw many sights that he hadn’t seen before. He saw emerald plains, and the fast running deer upon the plains. He also saw the city that his father talked about, and the two-legged animals – humans. Finally, he came to the sea, where he saw whales spouting water, and a school of dolphins that jumped out of the ocean, which frightened him. He also made friends with the seagulls that lived by the sea. Little kite realized that hearing others talk about their adventures is no match for firsthand experience.
